The main research areas of the Department are:

1. theoretical and methodological framework for the development of local communities;
2. development of scientific methods and techniques of analysis of the socio-economic potential of local communities, justification of assessment system to determine the effectiveness of their development;
3. elaboration of strategic and policy documents for the development of rural areas;
4. identification of reserves to multifunctional development of territorial communities.

Scientific research themes:

1. Social and economic development potential of rural areas in Western region of Ukraine: ways of increasing and prospects of use.
2. Prognostication of rural areas development in the Carpathian region of Ukraine.
3. The methodology of development forecasting for industrial production in the region.
4. Modeling of the spatial development of territorial and production systems.
