The main research areas of the Sector are:

• Spatial development and organization of the economy of territorial-social systems of different hierarchical levels (communities, cities, districts, regions) in the context of their integration into the world economic space:
  • research of market institutions and factors of the spatial organization of society and economy (including business), spatial and structural-functional transformations and imbalances of the region's economy;
  • scientific and methodological substantiation of the choice and placement of the optimal forms of spatial organization of business, spatial planning of objects of investment and innovation infrastructure;
  • substantiation of priority directions and mechanisms of spatial development and regulation of spatial organization of economy by territorial-social systems of different hierarchical levels, development of scientific and practical recommendations on stimulation (support) of development of perspective forms of spatial organization of business, development of strategies (programs, road maps) of scientific technological, innovative and socio-economic development at the state, regional, sectoral and local levels;
• Entrepreneurial potential and the formation of a favorable business (including investment) climate at the national and regional levels:
  • comprehensive analytical support for business development processes, competitive positioning of regions taking into account modern challenges of socioeconomic development;
  • research on the prospects for the development of social entrepreneurship and partnership, socially responsible business;
  • substantiation of mechanisms of formation of favorable business environment, increasing of capitalization of territories, intra-regional and foreign economic integration potential of business and regions (territories), territorial marketing;
• Problems of functioning of cities and modern tendencies of development of urban processes:
  • the study of the features of the formation of agglomerations, metropolitan regions and metropolitan networks, the justification of the approaches to managing their spatial development;
  • research of the center-peripheral interactions, the influence of metropolitan and agglomerative processes on the quality of life of the population of territorial-social systems;
  • substantiation of priority directions and mechanisms of realization of the metropolitan policy; foresight research in the field of development of "smart cities".
